WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 15, 2001
The IONA XMLBus(TM) is Available Free of Charge at www.xmlbus.com
IONA(R), the leading e-Business Platform provider for Total Business Integration(TM) (NASDAQ: IONA), today announced that, for the first time, Web Services created in .NET can be utilized in J2EE(TM) environments, and vice versa, using the IONA XMLBus(TM) Technology Preview Version 1.2.0 released today.
"We are providing our customers with a unified solution for exposing applications as Web Services regardless of the underlying infrastructure," said John Rymer, IONA's vice president of product marketing. "IONA is committed to supporting existing customer infrastructure investments, by providing interoperability amongst Web Services residing on disparate platforms such as .NET, J2EE, COM, and CORBA."
IONA now offers the leading Web Services platform designed to insure interoperability among .NET, MS SOAP Toolkit, and J2EE environments. The IONA XMLBus allows developers to build Web Services from J2EE applications running on the IONA iPortal, BEA WebLogic, or IBM WebSphere application servers. IONA XMLBus has been interoperability tested with nine Web Service implementations, including MS.NET and the MS SOAP Toolkit. In order to illustrate how this interoperability works, IONA ships a .NET retail application with IONA XMLBus that communicates via SOAP to an IONA XMLBus Web Service that brokers book catalogs and quotes for bulk book purchases.
Other key features of IONA XMLBus include:
-- Support for SOAP with Attachments allows the development of Web Services based upon document passing style. Multi-part MIME attachments within a SOAP message can transmit XML documents, images, arbitrary binary data, and encrypted messages across the wire. This implementation demonstrates IONA's commitment to ebXML.
-- SSL integration to enable Web Services to communicate via HTTPS.
-- Support for industry standards such as SOAP v1.1, SOAP v1.2, and WSDL v1.1 and the 1999, 2000 and 2001 version of the XML Schema.
-- JMX instrumentation ensures that customers can administer and manage Web Services in the same way that they manage their existing systems.
-- Broad platform coverage enables developers to choose a single solution for Web Services and be confident that it will work across a variety of different development platforms.
Web Services Developers Resource Center
Developers can investigate the benefits of Web Services at www.xmlbus.com, a developer forum for IONA XMLBus and Web Services. They can interact with Web Services running live on the site or can download IONA XMLBus at no charge to build their own.
From the Resource Center developers can download IONA XMLBus which features a detailed Broker/Supplier Web Service Book Distribution demonstration that integrates Microsoft .NET and Sun's J2EE. In this demonstration, Book Suppliers register with the Broker publishing their book catalog. When a Retail store requests a quote on books from the broker, the broker sends out a request for a quote to all of the suppliers of the specified books. The suppliers in turn let the broker know what the price is for the quantity requested. The broker then analyzes the information and returns the lowest price to the Retail store. In this example, both Java and .NET clients are used to communicate to back-end Java Servers.
Delivering Web Services Backed by Industry Standards
As part of the IONA e-Business Platform for Total Business Integration, IONA XMLBus enables organizations to expose a variety of back-office systems and Internet information sources as XML-based Web services. This functionality can then be invoked by applications anywhere on the Internet promoting effective distributed computing applications.
The IONA XMLBus uses the Web Service Definition Language (WSDL) to describe Web services interfaces. Registration and lookup of these WSDL service interfaces is conducted via a registry based on the Universal Description, Discover and Integration (UDDI) standard. The XMLBus uses Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) for invoking Web services. The WSDL, UDDI and SOAP specifications are being driven by the W3C, and IONA has been a significant contributor to the WSDL and SOAP initiatives.
