World leader in wireless infrastructure - Samsung FastLeader - Samsung Electronics' CDMA2000 1xEV-DO solution is discussed

When more than 2,400 delegates from across the region gathered around the city of Busan for this year's Asian Games, thousands of sport fans were able to follow the daily exploits of the competing atheletes, right on their handsets.

While the rest of the world struggles with the complexity of implementing next generation wireless services, 3G is already a reality in Korea, where some 10 million users already have access to high-speed wireless data services.

Leading Korean equipment maker, Samsung Electronics, has pushed the performance envelop of wireless networks to new heights with its FASTLeader range of wireless infrastructure systems. FASTLeader includes a state-of-the-art range of CDMA2000 1X and CDMA2000 1xEV-DO (Evolution Data Only) systems.

Samsung's end-to-end CDMA2000 1xEV-DO solution was instrumental in enabling a new category of high-speed data services that allowed rich, multimedia content to be delivered to users' handsets during the Asian Games.

With CDMA2000 1xEV-DO, Korean users can now send high-quality video messages to their friends, sing along to Karaoke songs playing on their handsets and get live video highlights of their favorite sporting teams.

These types of services, along with enhanced mobile commerce, location-specific information and of course, high-speed Internet access, are already paying dividend for Korean operators, who have seen their revenue and profit rise considerably as a result. Statistics from Korean operators show that data-enabled users often spend twice as much a month as non-data users.

As the wireless and Internet worlds converge, Samsung's CDMA2000 1xEV-DO solution is paving the way for operators worldwide to introduce new multimedia services for their subscribers.

Revolution through Evolution

Today, nearly 10 million mobile phone users in Korea have the ability to access online information and services anywhere, anytime over CDMA2000 1X networks. All these user can now shop, play and get critical information right on the screen of their mobile phones. With CDMA2000 1xEV-DO, they will now be able to enjoy the same set of applications, but with high-quality multimedia content on top.

Instead of simply reading a news story on their mobile phone, they will now be able watch the news broadcast. Instead of just looking at a picture of a product, users will be able to watch a product demonstration in high-quality video when shopping for goods with their mobile phones. With its optimized data capabilities, CDMA2000 1xEV-DO will also bring about a host of brand new services, such as mobile television, advanced multiplayer network games, and video-on-demand, right to a user's handset.

Samsung's state-of-art CDMA2000 1xEV-DO systems are powering the world's most advanced wireless networks, providing operators a robust set of broadband wireless data services to offer their existing customers and to attract new subscribers.

Unlike capital-intensive voice-oriented 3G deployments, the Samsung CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network is a cost-effective solution that is optimized for existing network equipment, cell sites and spectrum. More importantly, the Samsung CDMA2000 1xEV-DO solution can be deployed today.

The arrival of the high-speed CDMA 1xEV-DO system will stimulate the development of new services by operators and independent content providers. It will enable service providers to quickly roll out new services before their competitors, thereby increasing subscriber numbers and lowering churn rates.

For marketing-savvy operators needing speedy roll-outs, Samsung offers the ideal answer with its total solution of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO systems and terminals.

Industry leading CDMA2000 1xEV-DO solution

Samsung's CDMA2000 1xEV-DO solution consists of a complete range of access network elements and a full data core network solution.

ACCESS NETWORK SOLUTION

Samsung's state-of-the-art access network solution consists of a range of BTS(base station transceiver system) solutions, BSC(Base Station Controller), BSM(Base Station Manager), DLR/DLM(Data Location Register/Manager), and AN-AAA(Access Network Authorization, Authentication and accounting).

Base station Transceiver System (BTS)

Samsung's standard BTS solutions are designed to offer CDMA operators an exceptional combination of capacity and functionality packaged in a compact, single-cabinet solution. Commercially proven under some of the highest capacity demands, Samsung's BTS systems support multiple carriers in Omni and Sector configurations within a single cabinet system powered by a high-performance RISC CPU.

Up to 12 frequency areas can be provided on a basic rack in the Omni mode with the capability to offer up to 12 frequency areas for each sector in Sector mode with the installation of an extension rack.

A full range of configurations are available, including PicoBTS, SubwayBTS, MetroBTS and SlimBTS, to meet the coverage and capacity requirements of even the most demanding operating environment.

Each channel card in the BTS now supports up to 96 channels for CDMA2000 1xEV-DO, or 54 channels for CDMA2000 1x, allowing operators to adapt their platform to changing subscribers and traffic requirements. The BTS are highly reliable, with built-in redundancy for the main processors, devices and links within the cabinet.

Base station controller (BSC)

Samsung's BSC is optimized to take full advantage of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO technology, and ensures that increased bandwidth demands of high-speed data will not affect the quality of voice transmissions.

The Samsung BSC uses a high-speed ATM backbone that supports QoS (quality of service) for integrated voice, data and video transmissions on a single network without compromising the unique requirements of each application.

The call processing capacity of the system supports over 140,000 Busy Hour Call Attempts for both voice and data for both 1x and 1xEV-DO. The BSC also includes a dedicated high-speed bus that links directly to one or multiple data core networks. The BSC's robust design allows it to support up to 64 BTS and 1,920 voice channels, while up to 12 BSCs can be clustered together to support as many as 768 BTS and 22,848 voice channels.

Best of all, Samsung's state-of-the-art BSC comes CDMA2000 1xEV-DO-ready. No hardware upgrades are required to deploy 1xEV-DO's advanced services. Simply add new 1xEV-DO channel cards and install the 1xEV-DO software.

DATA CORE NETWORK

Samsung's Data Core Network solution for CDMA2000 1xEV-DO offers a robust, highly scalable solution that comprises of Packet Data Serving Node(PDSN), Home Agent(HA), Authorization, Authentication and accounting(AAA), EMS(Element Management System).

What is CDMA2000 1xEV-DO?

CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is a cutting edge network technology designed to offer CDMA operators a smooth and seamless migration path to next generation data services.

Optimized for wireless data, CDMA2000 1xEV-DO offers an unprecedented 2.4 Mbps of data-only throughput, surpassing even the International Telecommunications Union's definition of third-generation wireless systems, set at 2 Mbps.

At the same time, CDMA2000 1xEV-DO allows CDMA operators to leverage their existing network investment and use their existing spectrum, while increasing the capacity of their network manyfold. CDMA2000 1xEV-DO systems are designed to be fully interoperable with existing CDMA systems, utilizing the same RF characteristics and components such as IS-95/1X CDMA and dual-mode IS-95/1X.
