Asset Management:
Rethinking the Recycling Process

A key issue for many businesses today is cost-effectively disposing of outdated and unused assets while maximizing on the returns. It is especially an issue for businesses that deal with technology items with short life spans or businesses that have to downsize. Outdated and unused assets take up space, tie up business capital and negatively affect the bottom line of every business. This issue has been debated many times with few solutions being found that would benefit the business. There is a solution to this ever growing problem. Smart businesses turn to IT asset recovery.

IT asset recovery is a system where outdated desktops, laptops, servers, telephone systems, and other items are recycled and reused. The items are broken down into two categories: reusable components and unusable components. The reusable components are tested. If they pass, they are sold to other businesses that still have a need for older equipment. The componenets that do not pass are either refurbished, if the cost is minimal, or moved to the unusuable bin. The unusable parts are recycled by proper disposal methods meeting government standards. This process of recycling helps businesses earn dollars for that old equipment that sits around wasting space and money.

The recycling process can be time consuming for many businesses. They either do not have the time or the resources to deal with it. There are several companies such as Millennium Information Technolgies available that can relieve businesses of this burdensome task. They offer the most money possible for the hardware and then it is recycled. Business like this make recycling a simple procedure. These businesses will arrange for the equipment to be picked up and taken away while leaving a profit behind.

Along with making a profit by selling equipment instead of tossing it, businesses can publicize the fact that they are helping the environment by the decision to recycle. Companies such as IBM have already jumped on this publicity. People are becoming more aware of what is happening to the environment and the issue will continue to grow.

The removal of old equipment has always been a problem. The equipment is difficult to pick up and move and the value is either extremely low or nothing. The question then arises of what to do with it. Many third world countries such as Asia are becoming the dumping ground for all of this out dated equipment.
